I don't know what you're referring to astreetyoureover; however, all of the traps are missing their weights - please expound...

I seemed to come up with the letters NT using several different approaches. Combined with the A EOS on the back of the boat, yielded A STONE. Possibly verifed by the crab pointing at bottom of frame.

Nice observation about the trap weights. Would the weights normally be brought to dock ?

Part of a cage appears to be reflected in the oar, does not appear likely.

You're ahead of me with NT - please disclose method, if you're inclined.

No, the weights are fastened inside and aren't fiddled with unless dislodged... and really, I don't know of anybody fishing (commercially) in the last 20 years that use wooden traps... except for gift shops ...

And for Rocarn, normally, there's a buoy for each trap with all the buoys being numbered, patterned and colored identically so as to identify the owner of the traps, but our would be fisherman stands in front of many varied and colored buoys.

The aspect of locale, like some of Pel's other paintings, is a juxtaposition of a fictitious foreground with a recognizable background, in this case the Bass Harbor light at the southernmost point of MDI - click here for the map. Notice on the map that we'd have to be west of the light in order to be seeing it and the upland on our left and the sea to our right. Also note again on the satellite image, there's no docks situated near that point, and for good reason - this point blunts Ol' Flipper Rider's intense and powerful blows!

The criss-cross pattern falling on the two oars seemed to be shadows cast from the traps in an effort on par with the rendering of that poor man's digits. The painting on page 40 and the border text on page 15 help to reinforce a theme of crossing lines.

I have been to the lighthouse and looked for the the dock. There is none there. It's a very rocky shoreline and don't know if there ever was.

I think the artist took liberties when creating these drawings. They are based on real places on the island, but not totally accurate. For example, there is no mileage sign post on Cadillac mountain.

I don't think they are clues by themselves, we just need to look at the drawings by themselves.

Thanks, kbellis. Lots of good background info.

I'd rather not go too far into my approach at the moment.

There is a lot buried here.

For example, the Fisherman is pointing upward, and his CAPS give BALD THERE
