    Default snail flip book

There is a mini flip book of the snail at the very beginning of the book. The first eight right-hand pages have the snail in the upper right corner. If you flip the pages, you see he is making a gesture. It's hard to manipulate such a small flipbook, but it's definitely there. And I'm not sure what it means, but I thought I'd point it out.

Does anyone know what it could possibly mean?? I have been trying to figure this out myself for quite some time.

I scanned the snail pics in last night and made an animated GIF out of them. It looks more like she's crawling than gesturing--like she's dragging herself with her arms. (no wonder she moves so slowly! ) I don't think I'm allowed to directly post the animation, but I'm willing to share with anyone who wants to see it.

I find it interesting that you guys are worried about posting stuff like that, yet you have his copywrited art as your personal pictures.

    Isnt that illegal too?

Not me, Innie. This is my very own Pook. Not copyrighted either. So anyone can use it!

Makes puzzle solving a tad bit difficult, at best, huh?

BTW, your pook is incredibly cute! I bet he doesnt pook from purple thistle either, does he?

i'm not too clear on copyright laws, but am i correct in thinking the law says if you change something at least 10%, it's not infringement? that's why we have so many stupid rip-off movies when a big event movie comes out.

so could we re-color the snail and post the GIF animation? or, how about this? put tracing paper over every picture, trace it, and scan the tracings. that way, you redrew it, not scanned in the original artwork.

perhaps i'm being way too technical and nit-picky, but just thought i'd post that.

if it's not fun, what's the point?

I've heard the 10% thing before, and that's simply untrue. I get into arguments with online art thieves all the time over this (being an illustration hobbyist with an online gallery, it's a bit of an issue for me). From Friends of Active Copyright Education (still images section, FAQ):

Do I need permission to use an image if I alter the image or use it in a different medium?
Those uses are called derivative works and are among the exclusive rights belonging to copyright owners.

Do I need permission if I want to use only part of an image, not the whole thing?
There is no exemption from copyright based on the percentage of the image being used.
Also, before somebody starts bandying "fair use" around (this is from the same section of the site linked above):

The distinction between "fair use" and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific percent of a work of visual art that may safely be taken without permission. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission. Fair use is determined by the courts on a case by case basis and there are no precise rules to determine when the exemption applies. If there is any doubt, it is advisable to consult an attorney.
And I don't really want to go to court to determine if publicly posting my snail GIF (original OR altered) is fair use. It ain't worth it--and besides, I'm too busy with the puzzles!

Just so it is known: On the official TT website forum, MS gives his permission for anyone to copy pages "for their own personal use"
