    Default The Essay

Here is a list of the of the number of letters in the clue solutions I've found so far: 2, 4, 6, 12, 16, 25, 31, 34, 76 & 225, for a total of 431 letters. There are obviously more given the gaps in coherent text, and two of the solutions I have don't fit in anywhere at this point.

Funny you should post this, I was thinking of posting a letter count - at one point i made it 400 + the word IDLE and i thought there might be some correlation to the 400 letters. But then i found some more i'd missed, so didn't bother. (The idea was that if we could get the solved messages to be 400 letters then these could be added to the Jack grid to make a new message.)

I can see all your numbers except the 6 and the 25, and i have a couple of unused - they are 4 (IDLE) and 5 (NORTH) long.

is your 25 from the SATOR square?

No, it's from the map (the other is from there, though).

If a P is changed to an H, then E's name is all on the SATOR square, was his nick name ERATOS? by any chance.

Not that I'm aware of. He called himself Philologos, and others called him Pentathlos or Beta, depending on whether or not they liked him.

I can see an easy 16 from the map names.
I will have to dig deeper for the extra 9 letters.

    I found the 16 + 4 + 5 = 25?

Oh right - are you counting WELL=4 and NORTH=5 ?

That means that the only one i don't have is Molnar's 6 from the mermaid sator square.

We have 431 letters which form a story about eratosthenes, from the puzzles.
We have a 100 grid of greekish symbols
We have a 400 grid of letters.

How do you think they fit together?

Could the story be completed in about 100 letters? That looks about right to me -
In which case how could the story be used with the 400 (presumably vigenere) grid. The story will be longer but maybe it hides a keyword.

Should we start to look at the current story itself to see if it contains hidden messages - or try to work out what the missing parts of the story should be (LIBRARY is one obvious one) and then try to reverse engineer these solutions to the grids?

    Any suggestions?
