This is what I think clue #3 means, after seeing clue #4. If we think of a string of letters as a snake, we have to get that snake folding together in a way (like the spiral vine) in which we can read some letters next to the others and make sense of them.

Looking at the 4 keys we have, I think they are too short and we have to use the rest of the text (80 letters are more flexible and we have many more combinations than with just 20) to find the answer.

I've been spinning in the same direction as you. I did think however that perhaps the keys could mean the date. Roman numbers I tried. All off. An easier tale, tail, end? Still searching.
I did come up with vinic. Hence my wine drinking solution. But really, now I am trying to apply reversing some of the decrypted text to see if that works.

Too add, I did think earlier on that koil ticker was a stop watch. A way of turning a dial. Perhaps we need 2 rings of letters but that would be a Caesar shift and I haven't found anything that works yet.

I think I've got the spiral. You'll have to write the letters out yourself to see what I'm talking about as this format won't let me make a grid. Keep the rows neat and read diagonally from right to left.

    AVKAN
    EESAF
    YINOS
    ECUIR
    INFTE
    DYAND
    OLTIU
    ECDTY
    IYOOP
    OIUHU
    LMEFL
    URIOS
    YNNTO
    DGFUT
    AIHHN
    NAEED

Now, starting with the first a, move over 4 letters to the n .Start reading diagonally from right to left. The "an ancient cipher"...etc. de-crypt can be read this way. I think it's interesting that when you get to the bottom right corner it says "The end"!! I will be looking deeper and if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Marvelous! This is awesome. Really. I am having much fun, even though it is very hard not to comment on what is here. Once somebody wins, I will post a full solution and put everyone's mind at rest about all of this.

p.s. Unlike my other replies in this thread, this one has no hidden meaning.

This is also not a clue. It just makes me laugh real hard.

While the rest of us are going crazy with this one, why don't you solve that "Count R. Erskine" one from moscow? That way you get to share in the insanity.

I am busy writing the official solution. So much time and effort has gone into solving this one, I want to do it justice with a proper solution guide.

Am I even close? I found the words"the keys" and am trying to figure out if the letters on those same lines somehow spell out the answer.I also ound the words :an easier tale" and am doing the same with that possibility.

There are 20 coils in my take on this.
