    Default Verse #1

    Fortress north
    Cold as glass
    Friendship south
    Take your task
    To the number
    Nine eight two
    Through the wood
    No lion fears
In the sky the water veers
    Small of scale
    Step across
    Perspective should not be lost
In the center of four alike
    Small, split,
    Three winged and slight
    What we take to be
    Our strongest tower of delight
    Falls gently
    In December night
    Looking back from treasure ground
    There's the spout!
    A whistle sounds.

    For the uninitiated, here goes:

    Fortress north
Cold as glass - Glassell School of Art, shaped like a fortress, is north of the zoo
Friendship south - Friendship park is south of the zoo
    Take your task
    To the number
Nine eight two - Train engine 982 sits out in front of the zoo
Through the wood - unknown, possibly means go through the zoo
No lion fears - past the lion cage
In the sky the water veers - the aqua tunnel exhibit has water flowing over your head
Small of scale - the children's zoo
    Step across - go through
Perspective should not be lost - you're in a children's zoo
In the center of four alike
    Small, split,
Three winged and slight - unknown, and the key to finding the casque
    What we take to be
Our strongest tower of delight - quote from Herman Melville, locating the clue in Hermann park
    Falls gently
    In December night - unknown
    Looking back from treasure ground
There's the spout! - the elf fountain?
    A whistle sounds. -??

Do you have a map to the area? I'd like to visualize how this verse works... It's pretty convincing!

I'm looking at Google Earth images of the area right now...

    Cheers-

It is soooo exciting to see trovers getting involved with this hunt. I cant wait to hear some of your ideas Moscow

This verse is the one that most of us oldtimers are convinced of. One of these days, poor old Wilhouse is going to find that casque. He has been to Hermann Park & the zoo so many times that he should be paying rent. The running joke on the other boards is that he owns partial stock in the area. If we are lucky, the parks director will adopt him and let him have free reign.

    Fox, you're the best!

for those who are confused by this discussion, yes, I have pinpointed the location of the casque to be inside the Houston zoo. It is in a part of the park closed off from the public today, but in 1982, it was free and had it's own public entrance.

Byron Preiss, the publisher and hider of the casques, confirmed to me the location right before he passed away.

I am good friends now with the zoo director, and kind of have a lock on being able to go in and dig there when I want. But the ground is full of roots and is hard as a rock, so it takes hours just to dig a small hole.

The zoo area is being rennovated in the near future, and I have been promised access when they dig up the area. And yes, I am a charter paying member of the zoo society...

let me post a couple of maps for you

the big map is of Hermann park. the other one is the map of the children's zoo where I think the casque is. LA is latin america, NA is north america.

nice maps there Wilhouse, thanks a bundle. Now if we could only decipher:
    "Small, split,
    Three winged and slight"

I'm with you, I think this will be the ultimate confirmer. Hmm, could we be reading this thing all wrong? As has been discussed on Q4T, could we be grouping the sentences incorrectly? Maybe it should be:

    "Small, split,
    Three winged and slight
    What we take to be
    Our strongest tower of delight"

maybe the "tower" goes w/ these lines instead of the December line. Are/were there any odd towers in the vacinity? Just rambling.....

Find that casque Wilhouse and put us out of our misery once and for all w/ Hermann Park
