We missed you both, but had a great time.  Jean, Mark15 (16? 17?), Nodon, and I wrote for three+ hours.  We tried to save it but decided it wouldn't possibly translate back to reality.  Basically, (HA!) our story was about a scorned female police office in Memphis, TN, and her interactions with her drag queen friend Marty (Martin? Martha?), an old lover (Ben), and a hotel clerk (nameless, but he liked our heroine's t-shirt.)  Add a lot of alcohol, PMS-induced carnage, repressed love, kidnappers in duck costumes, and an oh-well-I'm-fired-anyway attitude, and you've pretty much got it.

I can't speak for everybody but I had a really good time last night.

    Default your spoils

your spoils are yours. the cannon of your womb
gathers its flags like all the children you saved
from what your soil feared. now mark the tombs
with scissors, limes, the rings you cut from stumps.
your spoils are yours alone. dance on the grave
and laugh at how you’ve cut away all monsters.
you will be beautiful without your helmet,
won’t you, saint? your larksblood cross held red
against the time you said was dark. your spoils
are yours; your sweetness yours; your peace
and pieces yours; your city yours. breathe your warfield
deep as that looming heathen shade dispells
your spoils. nothing was spoiled ever. you carved
the history from your own bright truths, you heroine,
you injured ghost grown whole at any cost.
your spoils are yours. never mind what’s lost.

    Speak Away!

Had an awesome time. Thanks for starting this Carol! I have never done anything like this.

We should make this a habit. Like every other Wed night. Or something like that. Whatever time/date/day that will bring in some writers.

    Loved it!

God bless the squat and knock-kneed nature,
the weed-bed booming out his warty name,
the untamed verb that chokes the chartered noun,
the wind that blunts the square, the rhubarb flame
that will not smile for your camera, the sick wick
and fuse and fury and winning water. Yeah, all
who disobey. Favor their fall over your feigned
    ascension, you cold-cocked counter, liar,
and damn your selfish curbs, you woodless pyre.

It dawned on me that the first post in the No Criticism thread was in May 2005, and that we've been fortunate enough to enjoy each other's writing for two years now. Sure, what got me here on tweleve was a treasure hunt, but what kept me here was you.

For some of you, writing is as natural as breathing, and I've been entranced by your talent. For others, writing is a great risk, and I've held my breath on your behalf more than once. It's this latter group that's kept my interest the most, as I have witnessed through your words courage, tenderness, vulnerability, and a wicked sense of humor.

Now that we've hit our two-year mark, I wanted to take a minute or two and thank you for sharing yourselves with me. I've said it before, I know, many times, but you all give me something that I just don't get in my daily life. The turns of phrases, the varying perspectives on the mundane and the incredible, the personal epiphanies, the fear, the grief - You have opened my mind to the world, and I am grateful.

I am also deeply appreciative of the less structured words you share with me off the threads. Whether it's emails, pm's, or im's, I have enjoyed your friendship and your company. So, thanks!

    Now write me a poem.

    Default A springhouse falling

I call it cruel: the carving hand in our heads
That taught us planes, planks, those angles
    Nature never knew. Now, instead
Of timber and bright nails, pale saplings dangle
Their insouciant thrust from ravaged, ragged places,
Bound and determined to return grounds that bore
Their start. Eaves cranked from rusted braces
Feed more rain to ruin. Leaves grind what storms tore
Down to second earth, wet births. This springhouse siding
Belies all hope of shelter from my unmaking.
Whatever I wished from wood, there is no hiding
From rot’s rooting call, grooved tongues breaking.

    Default grass

it seems i have poor shoes of late
and celebrate scotish tidings on strings
the ache is there - a hornet between that sweet, secret palm
between toes - is that violet?
    sandals sting, ballet ropes, hang
however did the apostles tread ground without winged feet?
i walk on sticks and skip past clangs
yet still the anguish beats an icy prayer for boots
where feet cool and scream without blood
filling wool socks with leaves and tender reed
holding the grass of your hand.
man snowshoe, you of cobalt lore and dread.

Far, far away are days of stress free life
Of living a day, a night without strife
Going a day not wanting something more

Down the road I can see some peace coming
In the shadows, there's a certain something
A certain dream that I've been longing for

But, in the here and now, I find my heart
Being filled with this joy, yet torn apart
Yet, there's a certain hope within the core

So, in life, where emotions rise and fall
It makes me smile to have you through it all
With your encouragement when I implore

So, bear with me as my heart sinks at times
Please know even when my joy will not climb
Your precious hand through it all, I adore

For you are my inspiration, my muse
The one that I care for, the one I choose
And, there is no one else I care for more
    Like Contests???
