Default Why can't Zac hear his wife?

In the Dream, Zac has No problem hearing the trees singing, but he can't hear his wife.

I'm no Dr. Phil or Dr. Laura, but could that mean that, since he is a Carpenter, Zac loves and pays more attention to wood (from trees) than to his wife. Thus Zac is more tuned in to what the trees have to say than what his wife is trying to tell him. Although She is the one trapped in some dark and dank grotto.
And why are the trees, whom Zac loves, being so cryptic with their "moonlike" song. Zac is Dreaming, nobody else can hear what the trees have to say, except maybe Anna. Can't they just Tell him where his wife is? Like "Zac, You gotta believe us cause we never lied to you before and your wife, whom you love Almost as much as us, is using us to send you a message because every time you go to sleep you start dreaming about trees First , like it says on page 86, and she is in Room 45 of the Dark and Dank Grotto motel on U.S. route such and such"?

YEAH AND HOW COME ANA DIDN'T GET THE FAIRIES TO COME AND SET HER FREE SINCE THEY HAVE MAGICAL POWERS. I THINK THIS PUZZLE GOES DEEPER THAN WE FIRST THOUGHT.

Well, I do now that the story says that his wife cannot talk to him in his head because he is human and not of the breed of fairies at all. Not sure if that helps you any.

Oh, he hears her. He just tunes her out.

But one benefit of having a halfling wife is that she's never going to ask him, "Honey, what are you thinking?"

that's a benefit? Wife that reads his thoughts, smelly doth, infestation of fairies causing mayhem in the house. I'd be "walking in search of lumber" all day, also.

And don't forget, they live inside his adoptive mother-in-law.

oh, and in a few years, when all goodwill from saving her life is thru, she'll bring up the fact that he (thru HIS doth) killed her father. If you are into that plot twist. And "Do you think those stringy haired, giggly girls are prettier than me, Zacariah?"
Actually - that makes me wonder about that quote in the book "flashed their beady eyes at him". Ana's got a bit of jealous streak, or there is something about flashing (firefly on 20/21 anyone)?

Maybe Zac can't hear his wife because he has a button in his ear - no kidding - see page 19!

He sure does! Good one, Gaines!

By page 101 it turns into a .....daschund?!?!?! (hearing aid?)

It goes with the "F" that's stuck in Ana's ear on page 36, I guess.
